The Hunger Games and How To Be Hip

There are so many things I loved about the movie The Hunger Games!  Seeing this movie a couple weeks ago was one of the very few times I agreed to see a movie version of a book without reading the book first.  I'm not sorry I did because it was a very engaging and entertaining movie and I am definitely inspired to read the Hunger Game book series before the sequel of the movie comes out.  If you would like to see my review of this movie, you can check it out in Street Articles.

There is an exponential growth of reviews and Facebook pages and websites that have come out since this movie opened last month.  But no matter where you look, you're going to see the cool pin that the main character, Katniss Everdeen, wears throughout her ordeal of surviving the Hunger Games.  It's a circle pin with a bird called a Mockingjay in it and the bird is holding an arrow.  This was given to Katniss by her sister Primrose for good luck.  (I'm not going to say any more than that in case you haven't seen this film.)

Hmmm, I thought.  I like this pin!  Funny, it's a "circle pin," something that was very popular in the '50's and '60's and here it is popping up in a futuristic sci-fi film.  Anyway, it inspired me and I myself wouldn't mind having a Mockingjay circle pin to wear and that, in turn, inspired me to write this post.  The title I kept thinking about was something to do with being "hip" because I am thinking this book and movie series is going to be one of the most popular of the decade.  Maybe not as big as Harry Potter but still I think it will have a nice long run with all the accompanying bells and whistles.  (Duh! you may be saying by now!)

I was quite sure the word "hip" is not currently used in the same sense that it used to be and I was right.  Just google it and you'll find references like lyrics to a Tower of Power song from 1973, a comedy album by some guys named Del Close and John Brent circa 1959, The Hip Song by the Chad Mitchell Trio and god knows when that was cut.

Then there are the various definitions:  obviously the one that describes where your pelvis and thigh join together; the "fruit" of a rose (didn't know roses bore fruit!); and the external angle formed by the meeting of two adjacent sloping sides of a roof.  I'm sure we all know "hip" as the beginning of a cheer, too, as in "hip, hip, hooray!"  The most current uses of "hip" I found have to do with the hip hop style of music.  I also found someone with some articles about investment who uses the term, "hip investments."

But when I say "hip" I mean the slang word defined as "Keenly aware of a or knowledgeable about the latest trends or developments." And "very fashionable or stylish."  That is me for sure!  I just don't like some of the other words like "dope" or "phat."

So "hip" it is.  And I'm going to be hip by getting myself this Hunger Games Mockingjay Pin.  I think "hip" is a perfect word for it.

P.S. Please feel free to let me in on whatever the expression would be today that means "hip!"
